The Philippines are situated in the tropical western Pacific Ocean about 100 kilometres southeast of mainland Asia. The Philippines consist of more than 7,000 islands - but only about 880 of them are inhabited. Most of the mountainous islands used to be covered in tropical rainforests and are volcanic in origin. Many volcanoes in the country, such as Mount Pinatubo, are active.
