The former Portuguese colony Macau is located near Hongkong and is now called "Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China". In 2005 the historic centre of Macao has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Our camera is positioned opposite the famous ruins of St. Paul’s cathedral which is located in the historic centre. Built in the beginning of the 17th century, the church was destroyed by fire three times and rebuilt afterwards. After a last serious fire in the middle of the 19th century only the front wall sustained. Today, the facade with its wonderful statues, portals and engravings, is one of the greatest monuments of Christian architecture in Asia.

Geographic Information

Macau's coastline is just over 40 km's and the Chinese border is less than 4 km's - giving you a rough indication of the size of Macau. Transport within the country is clearly not an issue! The land is predominantly flat with some rolling hills and lush vegetation.

Key aspects of tourism
The main tourist attraction in Macau is gambling, which is legal and is the reason for Macau's name "Monte Carlo of the East".
