Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne is a city in north-central Switzerland. With a population of about 76,000, it is the most populous city in Central Switzerland, and a nexus of transportation, telecommunications, and government of this region.

Due to its location on the shore of Lake Lucerne, within sight of the Swiss Alps, Lucerne has long been a popular destination for tourists.

From the roof of the building of the Lucerne Main Post, the earthTV webcam offers a breathtaking view over the entire Old and New Town, which are connected by one of the city's famous landmarks, the Chapel Bridge, a wooden bridge first built in the 14th century and the oldest covered bridge in the world. Other highlights of this location are the Pilatus Mountain, the gourmet restaurant "Château Gütsch" and the second famous symbol of the city, the Royal Church of St. Leodegar.

Geographic Information

The Swiss landscape is characterised by the Alps, a high mountain range running across the central-south of the country. Among the high peaks of the Swiss Alps are countless valleys, some with glaciers. From there, the headwaters of several major European rivers such as the Rhine, the Rhône, the Inn, the Aare or the Ticino, flow down into lakes such as Lake Geneva, Lake Zürich, Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Constance and farther down. The northern, more populous part of the country is more open, but can still be fairly mountainous because of the Jura Mountains, a smaller range in the northwest.

Key aspects of tourism
Alpine sports are quite popular in Switzerland because of the mountainous landscape. Walking, bycicling and mountainbiking are especially popular with the active vacationers coming to Switzerland.
