Webcam Medina Al-Masjid an-Nabawi Editors' Pick
The Prophet's Mosque in Medina is not only one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Islam, it is - after the Great Mosque Al Haram in Mecca - the second largest mosque in the world. Here, Prophet Muhammad is buried beneath the famous Green Dome. The earthTV camera offers, especially for non-Muslims who are not allowed admission, a unique view of the truly overwhelming holy place of the founding father of Islam. The ten minarets reach up to 105 meters in height, their insides consist of precious materials such as marble and gold. Each year, two million Muslim pilgrims visit the Prophet's Mosque, which can accommodate up to 600,000 believers. Nevertheless, the Masjid al Nabawi will be expanded and soon be able to hold 1.8 million people. The space around the Prophet's Mosque consists of a very special forest, a forest made out of high tech parasols! Depending on the weather conditions and time of the day, they can open and close within three minutes providing shade for the pilgrims. At night the parasols turn into a shining sea of lanterns!
