WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN

The football World Cup in South Africa kicks off in June 2010. earthTV counts down the minutes until the first whistle blows.

Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban

Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban has a capacity of 70,000 and replaces the old King’s Park Stadium. One semi-final of the 2010 World Cup will take place at the Durban stadium. A magnificent arch, symbolizing South African unity, supports the stadium roof and will be accessible to visitors by cable car.

Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg

Soccer City Stadium (FNB Stadium) in Johannesburg is a football-specific stadium with a capacity for 94,700. It’s the biggest stadium in South Africa and one of the ten biggest stadiums in the world. FNB Stadium will host, amongst others, the opening match and the final of the World Cup.

Green Point Stadium, Cape Town

In Cape Town, the old Green Point Stadium has been demolished to build a new, bigger stadium, with 68,000 seats, 55,000 of the seats are permanent and will remain after the tournament.

Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria

In Pretoria, the world cup matches will be held at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. It has a capacity of 52,000 and has already successfully hosted Confederations Cup matches in 2009. First- and second-round World Cup games will be played in Pretoria.
