The Swisscommemorade on this day the creation of their confederation on the year 1291. The so-called "Bundesbrief" of 1291 serves as document thereof, in which the 3 old cantons came to an understanding of a defence treaty. This official holiday is also a work-free day in the whole of Switzerland since 1994.
