The State of Qatar is an Arab emirate, set on a peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Qatar’s total area is about 11,600 km², reaching to the Saudi Arabian border in the south and also including a couple of islands in the Persian Gulf.

Doha, with about 500,000 residents, is the capital and also the largest city of Qatar. About 80% of the country’s population is living directly in the city or its surrounding suburbs. Apart from that, Doha is the economic and industrial centre of Qatar.

Geographic Information

Qatar's surface is mostly dominated by boulder and gravel deserts. Only in the outer southeast sand dunes have formed as well. On the coast, there are several large bays, and especially on the eastern coast several coral reefs can be found. Ground water in Qatar is quite salty in general. Therefore, drinking water must be obtained in seawater desalination facilities.

Visitors are invited to explore both modern Doha with its many shopping centers and malls as well as the souks, the traditional markets. Especially visiting the souks promises a unique experience. For a bit of rest and relaxation the white sandy beaches on the bay are just perfect. Scuba divers can as well enjoy the sight of shells, corals and tropical fish here.
